Womb of The Deep at Alternative Kilkenny Arts Fest

Saturday 09th August 2025
Location: Hole in the Wall 17 High Street R95 TY30 Kilkenny
What does it mean to belong? To be an Irish person at sea in the English language? To feel like a fish out of water? “Womb of The Deep” is a sonic and poetic exploration by Molly May O’Leary and Myjyn which honours the mermaid to explore these questions as well as the vast, mysterious and unforgiving ocean, she calls home.

Molly May O’Leary

Molly May O’Leary is a singer and poet who explores forgotten territories of girlhood, mysticism and love. In 2021, she released a fairy tale concept album ‘Lambent Flame’ with Liam Ó Maonlaí and Fionn Ó hAlmhain, as part of her masters in Glasgow School of Art, for which she received a first class honours. It was as much a research project as a musical one and took influence from Sylvia Federici, Manchán Magan and David Abram. She has published across Dublin poetry communities including three poems for the Frustrated Writers Anthology Vol.1in 2023. She was the lead singer of ethereal punk band Lesser Rituals, who she wrote for and performed with regularly. More recent projects include her single ‘Open’ as well as ‘SIÚL’ in collaboration with Blue Niall, 2024. She is deeply interested in ancient history, Ireland and pre-capitalistic modes of enchantment and care. She defends the feminine and deep within her girlish lion heart she dreams of “channelling angels in the new age now” as Lana Del Rey once sung.

Rachel Nic Thomás

Rachel Nic Thomás is an Irish singer and composer based in Dublin. She has a BA in Music, majoring in Composition from Trinity Collee Dublin and a Masters in Vocal Performance from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She has been a member of the Irish Composers Collective since 2017 with her most recent works ranging between contemporary classical ensemble piece to electronic short-film soundtracks. Rachel performs frequently with various groups and ensembles around Dublin, including irish folk group Celtic Calling, of which she is a co-founder. Most recently she has begun performing and releasing music under the name ‘Myjyn’, a solo project in which she explores the genre of alternative folk, as she marries traditional song practices with contemporary composition elements by incorporating loop pedal and electronics into her exploration of both original and arranged songs. She was awarded the Agility Award from the Arts Council to develop this project, releasing her first single “Dark Is The Colour” in May 2024, quickly followed by the release of her second single “Communion” and a sold out crowd at her debut headline gig in The Cobblestone in June 2024. Most recently she has released her version of the sean-nós song ‘Amhrán na Leabhar’ in March 2025, which has had national radio play and received coverage in RTÉs ‘Behind The Music’ segment.
