PROGRAMME & PERFORMERS Ludwig van Beethoven Sonata no. 30 in E major, op. 109 George Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue Sergei Rachmaninov Sonata no. 1 in D minor, op. 28 Celebrated Irish pianist Fiachra Garvey returns to Kilkenny, presenting masterworks of the solo piano canon in advance of his next solo recital at London’s Wigmore Hall. Beethoven’s late E major sonata op. 109 is a work of sheer beauty, featuring some of the composer’s most heartbreakingly poignant melodies. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue is an audience favourite the world over and an ode to New York. Rachmaninov’s Sonata No 1 in D minor is a work which strikes fear into many pianists, due to its colossal scale, technical difficulty and emotional demands. Three works which compliment each other and provide the listener with the full spectrum of the piano’s incredible possibilities! Fiachra Garvey is founder and artistic director of the West Wicklow Festival and co-founder and artistic director of the Classical Vauxhall. “Doubles octaves, lightning-like leaps and other virtuosic moments were brilliantly dispatched by Garvey who brought the piece to a gripping conclusion” Bachtrack (on Fiachra Garvey)
