On Saturday 23rd March Mollie Douthit will lead a special Children’s Masterclass in Butler Gallery’s Main Gallery to coincide with her exhibition When Worlds Collide.
This special event will explore When Worlds Collide in depth and is an exceptional opportunity for children to learn directly from the exhibiting artist. Mollie will lead participants through the making of her artworks on display. Children will learn about the art element of tone, through working with the simple everyday staple of bread pre-toasted to different levels of darkness. Mollie will introduce ideas of domesticity and everyday themes that are highlighted and elevated in her artwork.

About When Worlds Collide:
Butler Gallery is very pleased to present When Worlds Collide, a solo exhibition of recent work by the Irish-based, USA born artist, Mollie Douthit.
Mollie Douthit explores ideas of intimacy, domesticity and memory in her work. Her paintings celebrate everyday moments and personal experiences where her singular sense of humour prevails. Her paintings of interiors are representations of the sensory and remembered qualities of space and objects sourced from the visual filing cabinet of her mind.
Over time Mollie has developed a palette distinctly her own, expressing emotion using saturated vibrant colours, reminiscent of technicolour films from childhood. The body of work exhibited is mostly drawn from memories of Mollie’s beloved grandparent’s uniquely designed holiday home, situated on Pelican Lake in Minnesota, where Mollie spent summers as a child in the 1980s and ‘90s. It was a magical world that firmly remains in her mind as a place of hope and love.
About The Artist
Mollie Douthit (b. 1986) is originally from North Dakota and has resided between Ireland and the US since 2012. She holds a BFA from the University of North Dakota, a Post Baccalaureate from Tufts University, Boston and an MFA from Burren College of Art at National University Ireland, Galway. Major achievements include the 2013 RHA Hennessy Craig award, a solo exhibition at the North Dakota Museum of Art, twice awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant, a 2022 Arts Council Bursary, and 2022 acquisition of three works by the Arts Council, Ireland.
Douthit’s work has featured in publications such as Hyperallergic, The Irish Times, Sunday Times Culture, New American Paintings, and Ilikeyourworkpodcast. Her work has been supported by residencies at the Tony O’Malley residence, Jentel Foundation for the Arts, Tyrone Guthrie Center, Ballinglen Arts Foundation, and Vermont Studio Center.
Recent exhibitions include Tyranny of Ambition, Highlanes Gallery; Cover Versions, RHA; Save the best part, BernBaums, Fargo, North Dakota; and Generation 2022: New Irish Painting, Butler Gallery, Kilkenny. Douthit’s work is represented in many private and public collections including Office of Public Works, Butler Gallery, Dublin Law Soc
