In the past few years, more and more bits of government have been outsourced to the Big 4 consultancies. So much so that the government has been infantilised, civil servants’ competence has been undermined and decisions are taken for the State by outside companies that have no skin in the game. This is leading to the crazy situation that consultancies, not government departments are running the place. There has been a coup debate at the very heart of government and no one noticed a thing. Where will this lead us? What does it do to the economy? And what happens to politics when the decisions are taken by partners in a private firm rather than public officials?
