Rigmarole are a group from Kilkenny formed in 2002 featuring Colin Ryan (drums) Canice Kenealy (vocals, keys) Eamon McEvoy (bass) and Conor Brett (guitar). Their sound is a unique blend of tribal percussion, inventive instrumentation and stream of consciousness singing/spoken word.
Canice- “When I’m asked to describe it, I think ‘jazz punk’. We are more interested in improvised and experimental performances than in conventional reproductions of 3 minute songs, our songs/pieces develop and mutate each time we play them so we approach it like jazz while our delivery and sound are rooted in punk.”
Zeropunkt has no songs and no genre. Their improvised music has been described as para-generic, neo-psychedelic, experimental and even neanderthal. But it’s possible to say they play a sort of country music, albeit from a country that doesn’t exist.
Zeropunkt is:
Fergus Cullen: soprano sax, synth, guitars, vocals, .
Jamie Davis: drums, percussion, bells, sax …
Damien Lennon: bass, bass VI, synth, noises, processing …
Hugh O’ Neill: trumpet, electronics.
They began as a quartet called ¡NO! in 2013, and re-grouped in 2016 as a trio called Zeropunkt. Over the years they have collaborated live with an array of underground pioneers including Glenn Branca, Damo Suzuki, Kawabata Makoto, the late Itaru Oki (RIP), Makoto Sato, among others. Since 2015, under either moniker, they have released 15 albums across all formats. The most recent is 2022’s ZPEP, and it appears on cassette courtesy of Last Of Our Kind. In recent times ZP have been joined by Hugh O’ Neill on trumpet and electronics. For this Kilkenny gig they will joined by Matthew Nolan.
