When they first appeared at the Festival in 2018, pianists Samson Tsoy and Pavel Kolesnikov were rising international stars. Since then they’ve continued to soar, both as individual performers and as a duo, launching their own successful festival and delivering adventurous performances everywhere from the world’s major concert halls to a multistorey car park in London.
This year, Kolesnikov and Tsoy return to Kilkenny for an all-day takeover of St John’s, beginning with this breathtaking performance of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.
The Rite of Spring may be best-known as an avant-garde ballet and orchestral work, but Stravinsky composed it on piano and even performed it himself, shortly before the ballet’s debut, with Debussy providing the extra pair of hands. As a composition for piano it is just as exhilarating as the full orchestral score, and in the hands of Kolesnikov and Tsoy, The Rite of Spring is a must-see event.
