21st-century capitalist culture demands people to be more resilient to the stresses of modern life, maximising the shareholder value of their employers at great personal cost. Therapies, drugs, and wellness are offered as commodified solutions to problems that originate, not in the individual, but in the system itself. A person on a zero-hour contract struggling to find an affordable flat won’t cure their anxiety by drinking more water, meditating, or binging wheatgrass smoothies. Something has to give, but what?
