The Economics of Colonialism

Friday 03th November 2023
Location: Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny
When the British arrived in India, the subcontinent accounted for 30% of global GDP, when they left in 1947, India’s GDP had plummeted to 3% of global GDP. That’s what colonialism did? Or did it? What about the counter-arguments that colonialism and Empires enriched many, created opportunities and led to a massive transfer of technology to the colonies? As the world is still coming to terms with colonialism and as there are new 21st century forms of economic colonialism, what better place to tease out the economics of colonialism than in Ireland, Britain’s first colony?
