Learn the art of Intaglio printmaking at Butler Gallery with artist Anne McDonnell. Inspired by Mildred Anne Butler’s High Court of Justice, an atmospheric work depicting a gathering of ravens in a tree, this one-day masterclass invites participants to explore imagery inspired by the darker, more mysterious side of the natural world. Throughout the one-day masterclass, participants will take an experimental approach to drypoint printmaking, experimenting with scribing into aluminium before adding colour with Chine collé. The class will begin with a demonstration and a chat about the printmaking processes, preparing sketches for the plate and the workings of the etching press. INTAGLIO PRINTMAKING is the family of printing and printmaking techniques in which an image is incised into a surface and the incised line or sunken area holds the ink. DRYPOINT in use from the late 15th century early 16th century by German Artist Albrecht Durer this is part of the intaglio family in which an image is incised into a plate with an etching needle/scriber. Suitable for beginners. All materials provided. About the Artist Limerick born artist Anne McDonnell has been living in Waterford since she received her Degree in Printmaking from Limerick School of Art and Design 1997. She is a freelance art teacher and facilitates workshops with participants of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, in diverse venues from after schools to health care settings. She is always eager to explore new ways of working and experimenting with new materials and new printmaking processes. Recent exhibitions have included her solo show ‘Nourish’ in GOMA in 2024.
