Location: Kilkenny Castle
The popular Trails and Tales event returns, this time at the splendid Kilkenny Castle Park. Join Teagasc’s Michael Somers and Catherine Keena, who will bring us on an interesting looped walk of the park, where we will find out all about everything from forestry and history to biodiversity.
Kilkenny Castle Park, comprising of 21 hectares, provides a fitting setting for the castle and a splendid amenity area. Originating from the ancient deer park, the park walls define the footprint of the Kilkenny Castle demesne. The parkland retains much of its 19th century landscape by Ninian Nevin. In the 19th century, the parkland had a bowling green, summerhouses and an artificial lake at the far end of the grounds.
Today, new paths lead to a children’s playground, the family burial ground, and picnic areas. The rose garden is the formal garden of the castle, located on the north front of the Castle, and is a 1970s style. There has been much work carried out to support biodiversity in the park in recent years. Join us to find out more about it!
